The Vandoren B40 and B44 Eb clarinet mouthpieces are close cousins. They have the same specifications inside and out, with the exception of the rails. The B40 has a thicker tip rail, which "compacts" and "centers" the sound (because more rubber is available to absorb the vibration of the reed's tip). The B44 is therefore brighter and more brilliant sounding.
Both are excellent for orchestral playing, and are probably the most-played Eb clarinet mouthpieces on the market, across the world.
We recommend pairing this facing with a Vandoren 2.5-3 Traditional, V12, or V21 Eb clarinet reed.
TRIALS?
Now, many folks allow for trials of mouthpieces. With Vandoren mouthpieces, I don't. Why? (Is it because I'm a jerk? No.) Vandoren's manufacturing and hand-finishing process is so well-oiled, so consistent, that every mouthpiece of the same model is essentially the same.
That said, if you'd like to return it, I can accept it and sell it as used, however there is a $30 restocking fee to cover the reduction in value of the mouthpiece.
You simply cannot go wrong with Vandoren, and it's a great value.
