Rovner Platinum Bass Clarinet Ligature
Rovner Platinum Bass Clarinet Ligature
The Rovner Platinum. First off, it ain't actual platinum, so don't start melting them down and building your life savings from those lumps of metal. They're an alloy.
But hey, it's the first ligature from Rovner that doesn't contain fabric. I gave this ligature a try, and I found that it is pretty similar to the Vandoren optimum, but a little darker. It's also got a bit of "zing" in it in the upper clarion. Your mileage may vary, but it's definitely worth a try.
One hidden benefit of this ligature is its reed-gripping capabilities; if you use synthetic reeds, you know that you've got to take the reed off before taking your mouthpiece off, because otherwise you'll have a reed-mouthpiece-ligature salad in your hands. The Rovner Platinum will grip the reed and mouthpiece such that you can actually take off your mouthpiece (or put it on) without the ligature sliding all over the place, and scratching your mouthpiece. Really helpful if you want to adjust your reed BEFORE you put your mouthpiece on your instrument. (Bass clarinet players: you know what I mean — it's so much easier on clarinet, but on bass...yeah, it's a bit acrobatic.)
In terms of sound, I don't know if it's that much darker, but I do notice a bit of a change in response when playing it. Have a listen below to all of the Rovner audio samples, or

Comes with mouthpiece cap.

All of these recordings were made with the same reed, and the exact same reed-placement on the mouthpiece, so that you can more easily hear the differences between ligatures (instead of differences between reeds!)

Absolutely amazing ligature. I switched from a cheap student ligature to this, so I immediately heard a difference. Not to mention the speed of the shipment! 10/10!
