Backun MoBa Bb/A Clarinet Bell (Cocobolo/Grenadilla)
Backun MoBa Bb/A Clarinet Bell (Cocobolo/Grenadilla)
Ok, now I get to tell my story about Morrie Backun. I first met Morrie back at the end of the last century. He was still early in his process of "Reinventing the Clarinet One Piece at a Time" and was just making barrels and bells. I had heard about Morrie from my friend Larry Guy, and was told to go visit him when he came to New York. So I got on the subway and met up with Morrie at his midtown hotel where he was holding court with some of the best clarinetists in New York. It looked like a drug deal—piles of barrels and money laying around everywhere.
Anyway, Morrie launched into his shtick about voicing grooves and turbulence and resistance and physics...and it all sounded a bit snake-oil-salesman-y to me. But then I tried this bell — THIS bell you see before you here (well, an earlier version of it) — and said, "Shut up and take my money."
Unfortunately, nothing is that easy with Morrie. He kept talking.
I tried his original barrels as well and got a pair of those, too. And, all of these accessories changed my life. Morrie and I went on to become friends, and he made his first wooden bass clarinet bell for me in the early 2000s. And he's still reinventing the clarinet one piece at a time.
Anyway, enough about me. Let's talk about you.
Simply put: try this bell and you will never go back to a stock bell. Fair warning, however: it's the gateway drug into the world of Backun. You may just find yourself with a new Backun clarinet in short order!
Cocobolo vs. Grenadilla? That's up to you; they both feel about the same to me, so it's pretty much an aesthetic thing. Note: These bells fit only Backun, Buffet, Royal, and Uebel clarinets—but not Selmer.
Please have a look at my Trial Policy for details on barrel trials.

I needed a shorter barrel very quickly. I have been using the Backun Moba barrels (and Eb cutback) for several years now. Because I recently acquired a new to me Buffet Eb clarinet that came equipped with a Backun Bell, I suspected the amazing sound difference from my previous Eb wasn't just the upgrade to the Buffet, but the Backun Bell. I read MANY MANY reviews about the bells, and decided, since I'm already ordering the barrel, let's just try the bell to see if it improves upon and already VERY nice 60's vintage Buffet I recently was gifted. Since this shop offers a two-week trial period (and is within the US, making returns easier), I decided it was time. I ordered the bell and barrel over the weekend, and it arrived to me within 3 business days...just in time for rehearsal. I decided to give it a quick test run before rehearsal to do a side-by-side comparison with the stock Buffet bell...and it only took a minute for me to know that there is absolutely NO way I am going back to the stock bell. WOW the sound difference is absolutely unbelievable!!! And of course, the bell itself is visually amazing. I am absolutely THRILLED with the new bell and very happy with this music store's service!!!
