Vandoren M15/M30 family of Bb Clarinet Mouthpieces
Vandoren M15/M30 family of Bb Clarinet Mouthpieces
The M-series of mouthpieces was developed in partnership with former Associate Principal Clarinet of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Donald Montanaro.
Th M15 Bb clarinet mouthpiece has the narrowest tip opening in the Vandoren range, a slightly bigger chamber (a more hollow baffle) and a wider bore. In terms of sound, the M13 is the brightest (they use the word "brilliant"); it has a small tip opening, a long facing and a thin tip rail. Because of this, the M15 is intended to be played with stronger reeds (3.5 minimum).
The M30 Bb clarinet mouthpiece is one of the more popular clarinet mouthpieces Vandoren produces. It has a larger tip opening tan the M15, and thicker rails, which, with a slightly softer reed than the M15 (~strength 3-4), will produce a warmer sound. I guess that means it's less "brilliant" in Vandoren terms.
TRIALS?
Now, many folks allow for trials of mouthpieces. With Vandoren mouthpieces, I don't. Why? (Is it because I'm a jerk? No.) Vandoren's manufacturing and hand-finishing process is so well-oiled, so consistent, that every mouthpiece of the same model is essentially the same.
That said, if you'd like to return it, I can accept it and sell it as used, however there is a $30 restocking fee to cover the reduction in value of the mouthpiece.
You simply cannot go wrong with Vandoren, and it's a great value.
